“Social Change Through Dance: A Study of How Dance Can Be Used to Teach Social Justice” was Gabriela’s senior Capstone project for the major she designed titled Social Change Through Dance.

This project researched how dance movement can be used as a transformative, expressive tool for economically disadvantaged youth in Maryland Public Schools. Gabriela designed a curriculum consisting of 7 lesson plans that introduced African diasporic movement forms, social justice issues (i.e. privilege, homophobia, etc.), and how to use those movement forms in a choreographic sequence to express the social justice issues they learned. The research period was ongoing for approximately one year and the curriculum was administered over the course of a semester.
